“To all the secret writers, late-night painters, would-be singers, lapsed and scared artists of every stripe, dig out your paintbrush, or your flute, or your dancing shoes. Pull out your camera or your computer or your pottery wheel. Today, tonight, after the kids are in bed or when your homework is done, or instead of one more video game or magazine, create something, anything. Pick up a needle and thread, and stitch together something particular and honest and beautiful, because we need it. I need it.”

Sometimes I just don't think I have it in me to be creative, to make something to take an idea anywhere that is any good at all. I'm not sure, maybe it's tiredness, brain too full of other thingsness, beat myself up day, sad sack me day or just as I sometimes say, no idea really.
I have found the best way for me to move thru those phases and stages is to go do something. Make something. Pick up a pencil or pen, doodle a letter, make some marks. Run a line of stitching over something. Cut something out and past it onto something else. Sometimes just thinking go make a few cards frees me up enough to enjoy the making without thinking I am making something precious or special.
I think Shauna's plea for all of us who face those moments wishing we could be creative is twofold - yes just go do it, do something; and then please do it because people who don't do it need those who do to be doing it!
As an artist it is a lovely reflection of how valued the work we do is, how much it can be appreciated, and how much joy it can bring to the world. How what we do clearly makes the world a better place for some folk and for that I am glad.
A little bit of doodling from last week's stuck moment.
