Progress and ponderings

There is much to work on and much to progress getting ready for our exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery in October-November. Susan and I will be showing our collaborative books, as well as our own work.

Once the work is finished I am going to enjoy looking back at the process: how I have gone about things; how things I thought would take off went nowhere; how I end up doing more work than I need because I worry about failing and falling short...so many observations along the way.

Another weird things I find is that I push work ahead on many fronts.  I am taking some forward here; some forward there.  I have named June the month of finishing things!  I seem to have several bodies of work progressing; but none that could be called complete.  Still, I am underway and that surely counts for something.

I finished stitching the covers for my 52 small books.  That meant all the hand-stitched symbols for counting dead women.  A quiet achievement.

Over the weekend I finished stitching the inside pages - and am loving the dangling threads. Can you tell it was an overcast day?

One finishing task to complete on each book, then they are done. And then I simply (!!) need to design a housing and construct it. Or have it constructed for me. In the interim, I have also enjoyed bundling and wrapping them in bundles of ten.

And I have made progress on more of my "Under Construction" books.  I feel great fear as I work out a layout for plates, and then place them down on the press (remembering that bottom right will really be bottom left etc) and then roll the press - hoping that they are each inked well enough, hoping that none move.  With the odd failure, I have managed 6 pages which I think can become books.  Much yet to do - more choices around threads and twigs and transparent paper and the rest, but I am feeling pretty chuffed that that part is done. Now I get to play with placement of objects and words.

Hopefully I don't stuff up the calligraphy at the very end!

  4. Love it all, but especially the books with their white on white. So quiet and understated, yet very powerful and respectful. And the Under Construction books have mesmerized me.

  6. Somehow I cannot see you 'stuffing up' the calligraphy! You work too intuitively and sensitively for that Fiona so all will be well. I am interested to see what materials and what method you choose to contain those beautiful stitched creations. Whatever it is, the choice will be the right one.
