Louise Bourgeois
As I pondered these words I went in search of some of my work that others just might not seem to get. I came across these wee blind embossed pebbles form that I had hand-stitched around and thought they fitted the bill fairly well. I really loved making them, and thought they were lovely, but not a lot of other folk necessarily saw the beauty in them.
I think a real truth is being spoken here; that as artists we all see the world differently and that we make our own art which may or may not be something that others understand. It is however, an expression of who we are and how we see the world and how we think and feel about things.
And if you are being true to you; you have to accept that others won't necessarily see beauty where you do; others won't always see an idea needing expressing like you do; and that others won't see how an idea comes together in just a certain way...
And that is more than OK, because it just is.
I first encountered Natalie Goldberg in her book Writing Down the Bones and have read many of her books since ... but my favorite is Living Color: A Writer Paints Her Words in which she talks about how her art practice supports her writing ... I love her realistic paintings, which inspired me to try painting for a time, but I don't "get" her abstract paintings which, ironically, are her favorites ... so yes, that is more than OK for both her as an artist and for me as an admirer (or not) of her art
