I have really enjoyed my recent burst of teaching and the engagement with fellow calligraphers and bookie folk. It's been great fun, really energising and inspiring, but having been on the road so much beforehand I haven't had much time to do my own work or follow up on all the ideas that have been bubbling away since the classes.
In between teaching I was still trying to do something creative, and I was fortunate enough to come across the work of
Heather Eddy who has created
a resource for book-folders. She provides patterns, templates and instructions that help you make some really interesting 3-D book works, and I began with the hearts...

Now that I am beginning to understand the principles of folding book pages better, I hope to make a few more from Heather's patterns and then see if I can develop a couple of unique Fiona styles as well!
Here's a corner of our dining room - with the book on display.

ReplyDeleteRonnie - pretty cool huh!?! Yes, there is a code to crack and the patterns/templates help so much!
ReplyDeleteClever and fascinating. Love your dining room 'collection' Fiona.
ReplyDeletethe incredible patience needed to do such precise folding is amazing.. and the results are so striking.
ReplyDeleteSomething about this is so very intriguing to me. The hearts are stunning. Thanks for posting this new adventure of yours.
ReplyDeleteHow cool is this?! (very) Love all your various angles of the book; it's beautiful to view. Next hand....diamonds, spades or clubs?
ReplyDeleteJo - its funny, I so often go onto the detail I forget to step back and when I did I realised I loved the look of that corner!
ReplyDeleteDonna - it's quite rhythmical and meditative and you do have to concentrate; but it's enjoyable and the results make me smile
Jo - I agree; there is something quite amazing about the effect
Jane - very cool! And yes I like looking at it form all the directions. You've given me a great idea/challenge to try and design those other hands (when I am more competent)
Love this Fiona, and really like how books photographed from different angles keep revealing more of themselves, love the view from the top.
ReplyDeleteOh my, Fiona, this folded book is absolutely stunning! What a great new technique for you to explore and play with! It's like origami taken to a whole different place! Or what the book really looks like, bursting its own boundaries, for those who have the eyes to see and the hands to release its true spirit.
ReplyDeleteHi Liz - like you I love all the angles. If only I had time to practise your grid!
ReplyDeleteHi G/TT - don't you love it? I am momentarily besotted and enjoying being able to fold when all other creativity is beyond me...and isn't it great to imagine that plain old books have all this magic lying within them???
Hi F, yes, this is right up your alley - taking the folded pamphlets at last years S on the E [remember?] into a whole new creative and beautiful genre. I look forward to the next one - ideal passtime on this miserably cold day xoxoxoxo
