A day on Mull

Barry and I have run away for a wee while to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

We are on the island of Mull at the moment and have enjoyed a perfect Spring day. We visited the island of Iona today, a precious and special place, but enjoyed so many quiet, beautiful moments along the way, noticing the little things that tell their own quiet stories...

We woke and went for a walk to the bay...

We visited Iona

The Cloisters hold special memories...

Some detail of the carvings.

And we drove home thru Bunessan where the bakery wall was stunningly blue, and the flowers showed their winter colours still.

Past a boat, abandoned in a field,  with such worn magnificence.

A precious day.

One again I am posting from my iPad and can't format properly, so apologies if things look a bit awry!

    1. There are airports one couple of the islands...I don't really do boats either but the trip to Mull is about 45 minutes in a very solid ferry, and from there to Iona it maybe 15 minutes. Islands are tough places to visit for those of us who don't enjoy boats, but I have hit on some good tablets which help. I must say I think it is worth it...go well.

  5. Fiona, I've read of residencies and workshops in the recent past taking place in the hostel on Iona. Every comment about them remarks on the special resonance of the island. Beautiful photos already and I am so glad you are getting this beautiful start to Spring migrating northwards. Sounds like a great start to the holiday!

  6. When I read the title, I thought 'Oh, I didn't know they had a Mull in Australia!'
We went there. It was lovely. We drove though and stayed in a self-catering cottage. At the top of the pass on the little road to get to Mull and the far west of Scotland from Glasgow there is a little town called Rest and Be Thankful!
Made the steep walk down to the helicopter pad on Mull...and wish I hadn't! Just as steep to go up!

If you can go to Campbeltown and walk out to Davaar Island at low tide it is magical! But do wear sturdy boots because you will turn your ankles a lot on the mussels. We saw seals in so many places around Campbeltown.

    1. Thanks Kate - my heritage is here as well and it always feels like I am coming home in a way. It reminds me of Oz - empty and rugged, and I love the soft light an colours as well.
