The second work completed for Vessel is this group of three works collectively titled 'Validation'.
Acknowledging our feelings is one thing. Knowing what to do with them and where to put them is another. Validation I-III are vessels which offer a safe place to put our lingering concerns about the pandemic, the invasion of Ukraine, the overturning of Roe v Wade, housing instability, surging food prices, electricity threats, climate breakdown and facing an uncertain future.
The first in the trio is Isolated. So many of us felt that way during lockdowns and even as we emerged from these, it still wasn't/isn't necessarily easy for us to return back fully connected. Some folk still work from home and miss the regular engagement; some folk remain at risk if they were get to ill and have to remain at home and inside for months. Borders might open and we might be allowed to get out and about, but some of that feeling can remain.
these brought to mind several cloth-related metaphors (hmmmm ... is that the best word, I wonder?) ... in any case, frayed, threadbare, and coming apart at the seams aptly describe the current state of my psyche in the wake of the relentless news cycle ... and I am indeed weary of it all
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz for that reflection - I feel that heir worn look, their openness, their fraying all suggest the feelings we have as you say, with the news cycle. Having them contained also feels not just that they are in a safe place; but they can look like a specimen jar too - observing feelings without feeling them? I don't know exactly what, but they seem to be saying a lot to me.
Delete(((Fiona))) love the way these delicate fragments float!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mo - it adds to that ethereal nature, fleetingly held I think...as well as some sort of detachment. They are quite intriguing and the longer i consider them, the more I feel about them! Go well.
