Thursday Thoughts...

The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark.
Agnes de Mille

I like this quote. I discovered Agnes was a dancer and choreographer and I guess that's where the imagery of leaping comes from; I see her lifting lightly into the dark space, twirling in the air, repeatedly looking for the perfect moment, the perfect place.

It seems to me that it encourages us to sit quietly with the discomforting sense that sometimes we don't fully understand the driving force for what we do; the process we are taking or the result we have produced. It says try again, and try again and then give it another shot as well. Keep leaping without knowing where you will land. It will all work out fine.

  1. This is a truth. Sometimes we don't "know", but we must make a decision and we must make it decisively, as though we know. When we get more information, we may make another decision. Anything done decisively will be beautiful!

  2. I like this quote. Years ago my work supervisor told me it is better to make a decision and get on with it than spending precious time mulling it over and over. As a serial procrastinator I often remind myself of this advice, and sometimes manage to follow it.

  3. It is a comment to start, leap into that piece and give it all you have inside. Sometimes it will fly, sometimes not. But each leap will make us wiser.

  4. Thanks everybody - I think its all of those things and it really does speak to just having the confidence to take the leap
