Mo is creating a circle of stitchers and sewers and makers and peace lovers across the world; bringing together people to contribute to her installation art work "I dream of a world where Love is the answer..."
Late last year she sent out pennants, cut from an old wedding dress and each of us is responding in our own way.
My pennant was creamy white, with little bits of foxing on it - a bit like rust marks.
I wondered about lots of approaches but ended up going with what seemed me - white on white stitching and lettering.
I have simply included the word love in the centre of the pennant (quite tricky to find a place called centre given its shape and how it might hang...). A bit like saying here's the answer; or love is all you need.
I transferred my own heartbeat script then filled it in with lots and lots of lines of backstitching.
I then used blanket stitch around the edge, and created a wee border of three rows of running stitches. Here it is on the ironing board!
Here, hanging in my sewing room, keeping company with a couple of birds' nests.
The pennant is now winging its way south to join the flock of love landing in Sydney...

"Grace in all simplicity" was what came to mind as I scrolled through your beautifully wrought stitches ...
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Liz for your beautiful words. Grace is a precious thought and I love how you found it in the simplicity of this piece. Go well.
Deleteit's here already (((Fiona))) thank you so much for stitching your love with such deep heart!
ReplyDeleteMo - thank YOU for your drawing together and gathering these hopes and dreams...
DeleteFiona, I left a comment re your exquisite pennant on Mo's blog: the word LOVE with its many back stitches done all in white, against the white satin of the pennant, shines with a reverence and seems to rise above the cloth, a living prayer/blessing for our world. Beautiful and moving.
ReplyDeleteMarti thank you so much - your words both here and there resonate and speak of beauty and honesty; and I feel so very honoured...thank you.
DeleteI have long admired your mastery of the elegance of white on white. This pennant is so much a part of that. Beautiful letters, heart-rending simplicity. Way to go Fiona.
ReplyDeleteDana - thank you. I know I love the simplicity and elegance of white on white and feel at home there. It is so lovely to know that people understand it and see all the things you see, not just a blank. Thank you...
Deleteit's LOVELY. Lovely in its balance and simplicity. I am also so taken with "in my own heartbeat script"!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dee! Keeping things simple and meaningful, without leaving a feeling of emptiness, is a challenge for me at times, and it is nice when I get the balance right. I designed my own heartbeat script a few years ago for calligraphy; but also love it stitched! Go well.
DeleteDeep hearted love .... Mo has such a good way of saying things at times. And she is right. So you, Fiona. And 'love' is just perfect.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Susan. I wrote to Mo that I felt at home here, doing this. No tizz, no complicated message, just the simple honest notion that love is the answer...
DeleteThis is so lovely and pure. Glad I came over to see for myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping over Nancy and for your kind words...
