I like this one and the way it differentiates between education - which seems to have a set of rules to get through; goals to achieve; and some deadlines in which to achieve them - and learning which is active and ongoing and self-directed.
I think I get it.
I am sure loads of people have thought about this and worked it out long ago; however, I haven't often pondered the difference and I really like the notion of being an ongoing, life-long learner.
One of my favourite quotes of all time is Michelangelo's "Ancora Imparo - I am still learning"
Yes I have been educated; and yes I am still learning. Perhaps Mr Ito is a little harsh in terms of saying education is what other people do to you, but I guess in many ways that is probably right. You receive an education. It is provided/given to you - or perhaps purchased by you. It seems very much to be from the outside in - directed towards you. It also seems to be about completing elements of a curriculum - learning the same things as others.
For me, the life of an artist is a never-ending learning curve as I explore ways to push boundaries, discover new techniques; use different ways to express my thoughts and open up my general understanding of what works and doesn't work.
It is a delightful learning life and I am grateful for it!

I used to carry a Peanuts comic strip in my wallet, until it was stolen (the wallet that is). But I never forgot the quote, perhaps because it was the basis for my college application essay, or more likely because I have continued to intone these words for all the years since.

Oh Liz, so sorry so late! I hope you popped that back in your wallet. The subtlety of that line about going to school being an education in itself says so much about many of our school experiences doesn't it? I am forever grateful for my education - and fo army ongoing learning. Go well.

ReplyDeleteSo true - so much happens beyond that set period of time; I am miles away from when I ended my formal education and know heaps more now! go well.
DeleteI too know I’ve been lucky. My university education was free and a wonderful time of my life. It taught me how to learn. I then worked in a job that involved continual learning and, now I’m retired and have time to pursue my interests at will, I find myself on a new path of learning, exploring possibilities and developing skills. I can only echo what you say about it being a delightful learning life (what a great phrase that is) and how grateful I am for it.
ReplyDeleteApologies for my tardiness Margaret. It almost sounds like a fairytale doesn't it looking back on a free education? I totally agree that any education that teaches us to learn is the best sort; and employment where learning is supported is brilliant and then the freedom to discover and pursue your own learning is great too! Enjoy !!!
