Thursday Thoughts...

“While we cry ourselves to sleep, gratitude waits patiently to console and reassure us; there is a landscape larger than the one we can see.”

Sarah Ban Breathnach

This is such a lovely quote. I really like how she suggests gratitude is patient, and possibly shy, and how it can console and re-assure us.

I often think of gratitude in that way - quiet and deep, gentle and consistently there if we pay attention.  The situation described here is hard - when we are right in the midst of something it is hard to take that step back and look at the bigger picture, consider the fullness of time, think about the long run, or how all things are relative...

Sometimes gratitude can take a different angle to the one we are viewing things from and we can find ourselves grateful for the time we have had; that our loved ones didn't suffer; that we got to say goodbye; that they knew we loved them.  Gratitude can help us try to re-balance our feelings of great sadness and loss.  Even tho it is more than OK to sit with those feelings and be sad.

Perhaps that's where the idea of patience comes in; gratitude doesn't swoop in and try to change your mind whilst you are processing things or are in too deep; it waits until you are ready to see the broader landscape.

Forever grateful to be able to spend time here...
